On May 8th 2013, Guy Maestri was announced as the 2013 winner of the NSW Plein Air Painting Prize.
Celebrated Australian artist Guy Maestri was awarded the winner of the 2013 prize for his painting Hill End (scibbo's lane), exhibiting his mastery of the en plein air medium.
Perhaps best known for his 2009 winning Archibald portrait of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, Maestri's plein air painting pays testament to his versatile body of work.
Celebrating the practice of plein air, Maestri described of his winning piece,
"Plein air painting has endured as a fundamental way of responding to, and documenting the places we are in. It remains relavent too, as the places we are in change. And in the period of intense observation that is required to make a painting on plein air, the understanding we have of a place is enhanced."
The winning work along with the top finalists are on display at NSW Parliament House throughout May.
